"Your present circumstances do not determine where you go; they merely determine where you start." - Nido Qubein
Whatever challenges or difficulties you face, therapy can help you move forward to a place of increased happiness, well-being and contentment.
As a qualified psychotherapist, I nurture a strong therapeutic alliance with my clients that fosters collaboration and connection, paving the way to transformative change within yourself through self-discovery and self-actualisation.
Drawing upon a range of therapeutic modalities tailored to your specific needs, I work on a diverse range of issues. I work across the U.K. and globally, with online therapy sessions for individuals and couples, those in non-traditional relationships, LGBTQ communities, expats in the U.K., and Employee Assistance Programmes.
How I Work
Life can often be hard to navigate, but we all have the strength and resilience to grow and change to live a more fulfilling life. My therapy will be challenging, warm and empathetic, involving self-reflection and honest conversation. I draw upon various therapy models such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Person-Centred Therapy, Psychodynamic Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, Dialectical Behavioural Therapy and Trauma-Focused Therapy.
What to expect
I create a non-judgmental space for you centred around empathy, so that you feel comfortable to be open. This is in order to help you reach your goals in a supportive and compassionate way. I help you identify what is holding you back, and we clarify your goals and visions so you gain a fresh perspective with the skills and self-confidence to move forward and take your next steps.
Individuals: I offer a safe, transformative space for you to explore what is keeping you stuck. I will help you move past blocks and traumas in your life to a happy and healthier place and support you through the process of creating change within yourself. I will help you develop a strong and resilient mindset where you can push through your fears and overcome your challenges and difficulties.
Couples: When working with couples, I offer an impartial, non-judgmental perspective, allowing each client to feel seen and heard. I implement communication skills and empathy and develop an understanding of how each individual contributes to and experiences the relationship differently to build stronger connections and intimacy between partners.
Relationship Breakups: Breakups are one of the understated losses and events that happen in our lives. I specialise in helping you navigate and process complicated feelings and I provide the tools to move forward.
LGBTQ: As an ally to the LGBTQ+ community, I provide a caring, non-judgmental therapy presence. I support clients through all stages of gender and sexuality exploration, whether it is seeking support in coming out or exploring a relationship with your gender and sexuality.
Non-Traditional Relationships: Non-traditional relationships can be non-sexual, couples who have love but do not have sex with each other or anyone else; relationships where there is a significant disparity in age or finances; grandparents raising grandchildren, being friends with an ex, relationships involving three or more people, can be two gay men and a woman who cohabit and raise their children together. They can also be sex workers who are in stable relationships with their partners.
Expats: My training and experience working with clients from around the world and my own experience of living abroad give me a unique opportunity to work with expats from various backgrounds. I currently work with those living outside their home country, such as expats, digital nomads, frequent travellers, and third-culture kids. I work on issues specific to expats, such as cultural adjustment, homesickness, re-entry, repatriation, reverse culture shock, and navigating intercultural relationships; many of the topics I address in therapy are more general mental health issues.
People come to me for help with a wide range of issues.
Here are a few of the more common difficulties:
Anxiety, stress reduction, depression
Career stress and life transitions
Intimate Partner Violence
Emotional regulation and anger management
Relationship issues
Trauma and loss
Interracial relationships
Self-esteem
Sexuality and gender
Non-traditional relationships

Person-Centred Therapy
Person-centred therapy, also known as client-centred counselling, is a humanistic approach that works on believing that you have all the answers from within to thrive. The core purpose of person-centred therapy is to help you self-actualise and fulfil your potential. It is a non-directive approach, where you lead each therapy session. I guide and support you in finding the answers while at the same time increasing your self-awareness and enhancing your self-esteem and self-confidence. This approach helps you reconnect with your values and sense of self-worth, enabling you to find your way to move forward.
Psychodynamic Therapy
Psychodynamic therapy helps you understand how your past experiences, unconscious mind and impulses shape your current feelings and behaviour. We build an accepting and trusting relationship that encourages you to talk freely and openly about your past. This can help you understand what you're feeling now, why you behave in a certain way, and how this affects your relationships. Psychodynamic therapy aims to create fundamental change in your emotional development by helping you understand and resolve your problems by increasing your awareness of your inner self and how this can influence your relationships.
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy
CBT aims to help you find new ways to behave by changing your thought patterns. Sessions focus on exploring and developing methods to deal with daily challenges and behaviours. We focus on your thoughts, attitudes and beliefs and how they affect your actions and feelings. CBT is a short-term, goal-oriented therapy that works on the concept that our thoughts, feelings, physical sensations and actions are all interconnected. CBT teaches you how to improve your negative patterns by changing how you think, behave, and feel.
Motivational Interviewing (MI)
Motivational Interviewing (MI) is an evidence-based counselling method designed to help people find the motivation to change positive behaviour. This client-centred approach is particularly effective for people who have mixed feelings about changing their behaviour. The MI includes four “Processes:” Engaging, Focusing, Evoking, and Planning.
Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT)
DBT uses a problem-solving and acceptance-based framework, among other strategies, usually to treat severe and chronic mental health conditions, including borderline personality disorder, suicidal ideation, self-harming, eating disorders and PTSD. Treatment starts with a specific assessment Q&A, and a treatment plan is developed with the client to address the condition.
Trauma-Focused Psychotherapy (T.F.)
T.F. psychotherapy uses different techniques to help people process traumatic experiences. I may use visualisation, talking or getting you to think about changing the unhelpful beliefs about the trauma. I help you find ways to manage responses to danger and fear, which allows you to take greater control of the distress and anxiety. Recognising what is happening in your mind and body when you feel stressed and afraid increases feelings of well-being.
Email me for an initial 1 hour session during which I will learn more about you and what brings you to therapy, and I’ll explain how I work. It's also a great opportunity for you to ask me questions. If I can help you and we agree to work together, we’ll then schedule our first online therapy session. I work with clients from all over the globe.
Sessions last 55 minutes.
If you contact me via an Employee Assistance Programme (EAP), your sessions are usually pre-determined; you will be referred to me with a certain number of sessions as per your health insurance allowance.
Please pay 24 hours before our session via BACS online or PAYPAL.
If you cancel your appointment, please do so at least 24 hours ahead of your session, or you will be charged full payment.
N.B. These hours are in the U.K. time zone. If you are outside the U.K. time zone, it’s still possible for us to work together, and I often do so with clients based elsewhere in the world. Contact me and we’ll see if we can arrange consultation and appointment times that work for both of us.
Online therapy is a very convenient and effective way of undergoing counselling sessions. We agree on a convenient day and time, and sessions are usually weekly. I email you a link to our session, which is usually via Zoom, TEAMS or GOOGLE MEET. Each session is 55 minutes long. I am based in Birmingham, but working online allows me to help people in areas such as Willesden, Wandsworth, Southwark in London and further afield, including globally.
Individual counselling costs £65.00 per session, and couples counselling costs £90.00 per session. The fee is payable before the session starts, and you can pay via PAYPAL or BACS bank transfer. I also offer concession rates or sliding scale pricing.
During our sessions, I provide a safe and non-judgmental space for you to explore what is troubling you and any difficulties you are currently struggling with. Together, we build a collaborative relationship based on trust, honesty and authenticity.
As a qualified psychotherapist, I draw upon the various therapeutic modalities mentioned above and tailor these to your needs. I guide and support you on your journey to self-development, self-discovery and self-actualisation.
To book your initial appointment email angela@amwpsychotherapy.com or use the link below. I will get back to you within 24 hours. This is an excellent opportunity for you to ask me questions and for me to find out more about what difficulties you face and what brings you to therapy.
Everything you discuss during our sessions is confidential. There are only two exceptions to this where I am obliged to break confidentiality: if you disclose involvement in or knowledge of any criminal activities or if there is a safeguarding issue if you or any adult related to you or your child could potentially be under threat of harm or abuse.
When you feel stuck and are struggling to cope or move forward, you need to ask for help. Therapy is a gentle and effective process in which we work collaboratively, at your own pace, and I support you in navigating and overcoming your challenges and difficulties to live a happier, more fulfilled life.
I offer both short and long-term therapy and also open-ended therapy. We normally book sessions weekly, and it is standard to block-book six sessions initially. Each session builds on the last, so you can build momentum, enabling you to make gradual and steady progress towards your goals. Undergoing regular weekly sessions allows you to progress more quickly.
